March 2017 – Last month, I had the privilege of emceeing a special gala held by my high school. Saint Francis Prep threw its second Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor, to recognize the exceptional athletic achievements of some former students at the Prep.
More than 700 people packed the Crest Hollow Country Club on Long Island on March 18th, 2017 to honor 58 athletes, coaches, moderators, athletic directors and 4 teams. Some of the honorees were recent grads; others graduated decades ago. All contributed to Terrier pride.
The night began with a lively cocktail hour, with musical accompaniment by the fantastic Saint Francis Prep Jazz Ensemble. The official festivities kicked off in the dining room with a stirring rendition of “God Bless America” by Joanne Persico, who graduated Prep in 1984 and became the all-time winningest coach of the St. John’s University Women’s volleyball team.
The crowd then heard from Alumni Board President Wally Bishop, Prep Chaplain Father Mark Simmons, SFP President Brother Leonard Conway, and principal Patrick McLaughlin.
As the honorees were called to the stage one by one, the crowd got to watch a short video clip highlighting that honoree’s achievements. The wonderful videos were produced by Dave Cohen, who also handled production at the gala itself.
Saint Francis Prep is the largest private Catholic high school in the United States. Its alumni include Vince Lombardi and Joe Torre among many others. Click here for the complete list of honorees from this year, and also from the inaugural Ring of Honor in 2014. Congrats to all!
